What sewing diva doesn't have scraps??? Use those scraps, or your favorite fabrics, for making a crazy quilt. One of our customers, Ginny Graham from Westbank, B.C. (Kelowna), a longarm quilter for over 8 years, describes her fun and easy technique below.
Ginny particularly loves using fabrics by Kaffe Fassett and designers he has inspired, such as Carla Miller, Philip Jacobs, Martha Negley and others. Check our newsletter coupon and bonus special below for savings on close to 250 Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
In her own words, Ginny “was introduced to Kaffe Fassett over 12 years ago, but the last 5 years I have been buying a lot of his fabrics and associate designer fabrics and I fell in love with them. I don't think in the 30 years of quilting I've been as excited about the colors and fabrics that he, Amy Butler, Philip Jacobs, etc. have been making, and they all blend.
Since I have been collecting for so long, I had a big bucket full of scraps - just can't bring myself to throw out anything smaller than an inch. I decided to make crazy scrap quilts from the pieces and just started sewing them together.
It is not difficult to make a crazy quilt. I just pick from my scrap bucket and start sewing pieces together. When I add a piece I often cross through the ones I have just sewn on an angle. You don't want all straight lines in a row. The piece I chop off I will use to start another block, or add it somewhere else. I don't usually have two of the same in a block. I square up to 12-1/2″ and then make enough to make a lap quilt, usually 12 blocks and add one or two borders. Anyone that has seen these quilts just love them as they are so colorful.”
We have to agree with Ginny. She generously lent us one of her quilts to photograph when she came to visit, and it is so beautiful and inspiring that some of us are now trying her technique!
